The Timeless Power of Storytelling

“Tell me a story.”  It’s a familiar request from a small child. But we never really outgrow our love of stories. We happily pay to watch movies and cable shows. We enjoy “behind the scenes” stories about athletes on ESPN. Many of us still relish a good, old-fashioned novel, whether at bedtime or on the beach.

Given the universal appeal of storytelling, how do we use stories to support and inspire ministry in our congregations? How do we celebrate the good work that is being done in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

For as long as stories have been told, they have been used to instruct, lead and inspire. Jesus is our role model in storytelling, as in so many other areas of life.

Notice how Jesus’ stories (also known as parables) were short, accessible and used images and words familiar to his audience. In an agrarian society, he talked about seeds that take root in good soil or die in parched earth. He chose a familiar route from Jerusalem to Jericho to illustrate what it means to be a good neighbor. And he urged the fishermen who became his closest followers to consider a new kind of catch:  people.

In a world drowning in information, stories break through the clutter to speak to us with remarkable clarity. Stories get people to care, to take action, to engage.

We all have stories.  Some are happy and fun to relay.  Some are sad, but just as important to hear.  We are looking for your stories.  We would like to hear how God has helped you through in your life, how being a follower of Christ helps and strengthens you, or even a fun story about a way God made you see a truth through humor.

Beginning September 12, all three congregations are beginning a journey through the stewardship program called, “God’s Gifts, Open Hands”.  A huge part of this program is the sharing of stories to help us understand just how gifted we are.  We can hear many sermons or read many inspiring things from other places, but nothing makes us see the truth like a story from one of our neighbors and friends.

You may feel you are not a good writer or you have nothing important to tell- but we really need all of you to try.  The following are a few questions to get you going:

-          When was there a time that you felt at the end of your rope and God helped you?

-          Was there a time in your life that you just knew God had to be praised for something special he had done for you?

-          What difference does it make in your life to be a Christian and a part of your church?

-          Can you describe a favorite mission of the church and why you like it?

-          How do you feel God has gifted you in your life?

-          What do you wish the children of the community would know about your church?

Everyone has a powerful story in them just waiting to get out.  Please take a moment to write one up or call and tell it to Pastor so it can be shared.  Your stories will help!

In the 21st century, we are blessed with a wealth of tools to tell the stories of “God’s Gifts, Open Hands.”  Video.  Blog.  Print. The way we tell stories hasn’t changed, and the need for stories is greater than ever.

Share the Blessing- Tell the Story!
